Give your hats, denim jackets, sweatshirts, and tote bags a custom look with embroidered iron-on patches.
This guide covers standard embroidered patches with heat-activated adhesive backing only. It does not cover leather patches, brim transfers, or other transfer products. Check product-specific instructions and fabric heat tolerance before application.
Recommended Starting Settings
- Temperature: 300–320°F
- Press time: 15–20 seconds
- Pressure: Medium to firm
- Steam: None
These are general starting settings, not a guaranteed recipe. Temperature and time vary with the patch adhesive, fabric, and equipment. Always follow product-specific instructions and test a sample before applying patches to finished merchandise or beginning production.
How to Apply
- Prepare the fabric. Make sure it is clean, dry, and wrinkle-free. Pre-press briefly to remove excess moisture, if suitable for your fabric.
- Position the patch. Place the adhesive backing against the fabric.
- Protect the patch. Cover it with a thin protective pressing cloth or suitable heat-resistant sheet.
- Apply heat. Use the starting settings above, ensuring even pressure across the entire patch and adjusting only according to product-specific instructions and sample testing.
- Let it cool. Allow the patch to cool completely before gently checking that the edges have adhered.
Tips for Better Results
- Use a heat press for consistent temperature and pressure.
- Use a hat press or pressing pad for curved hats.
- Always check the heat tolerance of the fabric. Avoid excessive heat on polyester, nylon, and other delicate materials.
- Sewing around the patch edges may help provide extra durability.
Care Instructions
Wait at least 24 hours before washing. Wash garments inside out in cold water on a gentle cycle and air dry whenever possible. Follow the garment’s care instructions as well.
Before you start: Test a sample using your own fabric and equipment. Do not assume the same settings work for every patch or material.
